From West Des Moines to East D.C, sweat-drenched soldiers fight through the unseen, saving time for uncontrollable feelings. This is all my people know, trudging through the knee-deep snow. Half-hearted heroes with no half-hearted oaths. Cuz this age is brutal, but the way we survive is by banding together. Banding, banding, banding in the toughest of times. From West G.R to East Lansing, sweat drenched soldiers have forgotten how to sing. And they don't know where they're going, so... (come on!) This is all my people know, trudging south to *screw* with Ohio! Armed with flowers, flannel, weed, and oats. Cuz this age is brutal, but the way we survive is by banding together. Banding, banding, banding in the toughest of times. I swear I'm not the only one (x1000) I swear! I swear I'm not the only one (x1000) Cuz this age is brutal but the way we get by cuz this age is brutal but the way we survive, cuz this age is brutal but the way we get by is by banding together. Cuz this age is brutal, but the way we survive is by banding together. Banding, banding, banding in the toughest of times. From West Des Moines to East D.C, sweat-drenched soldiers fight through the unseen, saving time for uncontrollable feelings. This is all my people know, trudging through the knee-deep snow. Half-hearted heroes with no half-hearted oaths.

(For) Bird 05:12
She said, "I don't want to see you 'round here anymore." She said! "I don't wanna see you round here anymore." And so it goes... (x4) Whoa... whoa. The autumn breeze feels like the last breath of the earth as it dies for half a year. Maybe I should hibernate with it, while bird is not here or there. And so it goes... (x4) Whoa... whoa. I won't be seeing Bird for a long time, but when Bird comes back it will be alright. I won't be seeing Bird and some days, I won't think twice (x3) (call and response) And so it goes... (x8) Whoa... whoa.

They say we're all such naughty children and we really should be sitting in school. With our minds up in the clouds and they're eyes on something better, it's so cruel. They'll just throw us in the weather (birds and bees could do it better). Back to learning how to gather, and there's really nothing better to do. Man it would be very nice, Please do not lead with your right. The sea-shores seen too many bombs, and Peter Piper's out a job. My tongue's tied over where we've gone wrong. They live the lives of fairy-tales with trophy wives and treasured things, so handy. "Take from the poor!" thundered the King, not Robin Hood, but in between--modern Candide. When the music's all you've got (and your souls about to rot). Burning in the Late June Riot, it's time to make some changes indeed. Man it would be very nice, Please do not lead with your right. The sea-shores seen too many bombs, and Peter Piper's out a job. My tongue's tied over where we've gone wrong. (thundering King guitar solo) (thundering drum and tuba jazz interlude) (angry hemiola trumpet/tuba feature) When the music's all you've got (and your souls about to rot). Burning in the Late June Riot, it's time to make some changes indeed. One! Two! Three! Four! Man it would be very nice, Please do not lead with your right. The sea-shores seen too many bombs, and Peter Piper's out a job. My tongue's tied over where we've gone wrong.

Jimmy 03:01
You want music you can build a house on, and I want to be King of the World. You want licks that you can eat for breakfast, and I just want to win over girls. So Jimmy, Jimmy what'chu doin? Jimmy, Jimmy what'chu doin? Put me on your show, pu-put me on your show. Jimmy, Jimmy what'chu doin? Jimmy, Jimmy, what'chu doin? Can I be you? Can I be you? You want stars with looks and lots of talent and I want to be thin but always eat. You want me to dance like Jimmy Fallon, but I just want to go out and drink. (trombone/trumpet interlude) (shimmy break) You, and I, and you, and I dancing, and singing, together, on your show. Come on, Jimmy! So Jimmy, Jimmy, what'chu doin? Jimmy, Jimmy, what'chu doin? Have you any wool? Ha-have you any wool? Jimmy, Jimmy, what'chu doin? Jimmy, Jimmy, what'chu doin? Jimmy and the Roots, Ji-Jimmy and the Roots. (brass outro)

Sometimes they sit by a roaring fire, and let Andrew B. play some tunes. One said he learns his songs from a Bird in a Cage, another said that's undoubtedly true. He can sing from a busy place, like Pulaski or New York, or he can sing without his words in the woods, that doesn't change if he's been heard. And I can't believe, we'd return to the city without a sound that's pure. Better to leave my wiles at the shoreline and to find a song that sounds like Her and sounds like what I've heard. (brass break) At night he sits in his lonely tower waiting to take down verse. The melody is none of his concern; he knows that his Bird will soon return. He can sing from a quiet place, like his chapel, or by the brook. Or he can sing in a bumping Mass, that doesn't change if he's been heard And I'm not the one to create resonance--a sound that's pure. Better to leave my wiles at the shoreline and to find a song that sounds like Her and sounds like what I've heard. (mournful trombone solo)

Serendipity 03:19
A Man, a King, and a Baby walk into a bar. The Man says make me one with everything. The baby laughs along. If you wanna get it together, you should not follow me. If you wanna get it together, Serendipity! Yeah-yeah. A Man, a King, and a Baby take cover where they are. a God says, "I made you and everything." I just laugh along. If you wanna get it together, you should not follow me. If you wanna get it together, Serendipity! Yeah-yeah. No flag no country, no country no flag. (x8) If you wanna get it together, you should not follow me. If you wanna get it together, Serendipity! One more time, everybody! No flag no country, no country no flag. (x8) If you wanna get it together, you should not follow me. If you wanna get it together, Seren... If you wanna get it together, you should not follow me. If you wanna get it together, Serendipity! Yeah-yeah.

about

Ioway is the Lake Effects' first full-length album, following their 2015 EP, My Friends All Left Me. The nine track, 35 minute album dashes through a variety of feels and styles, but maintains the Lake Effects’ signature characteristic—though the music is dark at times, a wry sense of humor and optimism infiltrate its entirety. The album features nearly a dozen instruments between the four members—traditional indie-rock instrumentation (guitar, piano, organ, synthesizers, drums, and layers of vocals) is joined by trumpet, trombone, sousaphone, and a variety of toy percussion instruments.

Ioway draws on the members’ experiences as Midwesterners, obviously including the twins’ childhood in Iowa. Many songs dwell on the common imagery of Michigan winters and the outdoors, while others are more blatantly comical, begging for a slot on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (“Jimmy”) or lambasting the average American’s lifestyle (“Broadway”).
